Novak Djokovic won Indian Wells final by defeating Roger Federer (i)The world’s number two Novak Djokovic on 16 March 2014 defeated Roger Federer to win the BNP Paribas Open Final in Indian Wells ATP Tennis Masters in California 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Tesco Hindustan Service Centre appoints Glen Attewell as CEO (i)Tesco Hindustan Service Centre (Tesco HSC), the global technology and operations centre for Tesco, has appointed Glen Attewell as Chief Executive Officer. He succeeds Sandeep Dhar, who spent over five years as CEO. (ii)In this role, Glen will work with the leadership team to continue Tesco HSC’s journey towards becoming a fully integrated part of Tesco’s multichannel strategy. He will report to Alison Horner, Group Personnel Director, who serves on the Tesco Executive Committee. (iii)Prior to this appointment, Glen was a Commercial Director at Tesco’s Homeplus business in Korea, where he has spent the last eight years. Glen has been with Tesco for 28 years in a variety of UK and international roles, including positions in several of Tesco’s businesses in Asia. 3. Federal Bank launches transit card for Bangalore Metro commuters (i) federal Bank launched its Namma Metro Transit-cum-Debit Card in partnership with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). (ii)The Flash Transit-cum-Debit Card will entitle cardholders to discounts of 15 to 21 per cent on fares. The bank has also made arrangements for easy recharge (iii)Federal Bank enables its customers to recharge their transit cards at bank’s ATM in select stations, through SMS, Federal Bank’s Internet Banking — Fed Net and metro stations. (iv)Federal Bank Namma Metro Card is a Visa branded Debit cum Transit card with Rs 75,000 shopping and Rs 75,000 ATM withdrawal limits across the country. 4. Infosys ties up with Volvo Cars for app development services. (i)Infosys has bagged a multi-year deal from Volvo Cars. the company did not mention the value of this outsourcing deal or the duration of this deal, it said that has been engaged with Volvo since 2010 and as a part of this deal, (ii)it will be strategic supplier to provide application development services for its global operations, (iii)Further, majority of the work involves modernising Volvo’s IT infrastructure. This application development work includes maintaining applications to support multiple domains, including marketing and sales, customer service, manufacturing, product development and corporate business functions. 5. DBS buys Societe Generale’s Asian private banking business for $220 mn (i) Singapore’s DBS Bank said today it had agreed to buy the Asian private banking business of French lender Societe Generale in a deal worth $220 million, boosting its access to the region’s super rich. (ii)DBS said in a statement to the Singapore Exchange that the deal “will accelerate DBS’s ambition of becoming a leading wealth manager in Asia”. (iii)Under the agreement, DBS will buy Societe General’s Asian private banking operations in Singapore and Hong Kong and parts of its trust business. (iv)This transaction is in line with one of DBS’s strategic priorities to be a leading wealth manager in Asia and will significantly increase the scale of its wealth management business,” Singapore’s leading bank said. 6. Vodafone buys Spanish cable firm Ono for 7.2 bn euros (i)British mobile phone giant Vodafone has agreed to buy Spanish cable television and Internet provider Ono for 7.2 billion euros (USD 10 billion), it said today. (ii)Vodafone, flush with cash from the sale of its US joint-venture stake to partner Verizon for $130 billion, said the Ono deal was a “significant opportunity” to create Spain’s top integrated services provider. (iii)The combination of Vodafone and Ono creates a leading integrated communications provider in Spain and represents an attractive value creation pportunity for Vodafone,” said chief executive Vittorio Colao in a statement. 7. NTPC approved 14366-crore rupees investment for Jharkhand plant (i) NTPC on 15 March 2014 approved an investment of 14366.58 crore rupees for its Karanpura thermal power project in Jharkhand. This investment has been planned after the company in 2013 was reallocated coal blocks in the state. (ii)The Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) in 2013 cleared the proposal of NTPC allowing it to set up a 1980 MW power plant with three units of 660 MW each. The project was struck, since 2008 following the withdrawal of coal linkages by the Coal Ministry. (iii) Apart from this a consultancy wing of NTPC has won a contract to provide engineering consultancy services to Trincomalee Power Company Ltd. The consultancy project has been won for setting up 500 MW (2X250 MW) coal-based project at Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. The contract agreement between NTPC and Trincomalee Power Company Ltd. (TPCL) and NTPC signed a contract. About NTPC Note: NTPC is Indias largest power company and was set up in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. It is emerging as an Integrated Power Major, with a significant presence in the entire value chain of power generation business. It has an installed capacity of 42964 MW. 8. FICCI-KPMG report on Indian Civil Aviation released The FICCI-KPMG report on Indian civil aviation released at the Indian Civil Aviation Show 2014, Hyderabad on. The report revealed that the over taxation, lack of infrastructure in smaller cities are hampering the high growth in Indian aviation market and spread of regional services (i)The Indian civil aviation industry is among the top 10 in the world with a size of around 16 billion dollar. India has the potential to become the third largest aviation market in the world by 2020 and largest by 2030. (ii) Indian carriers are expected to double their fleet size by 2020 to 1000 aircraft which promises a huge opportunity for the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) business. (iii)The government should set up an inter-Ministerial task force on MRO to check the outflow of MRO revenue, foreign exchange and jobs (iv)The total manpower requirement of airlines is estimated to rise from 62000 in 2011 to 117000 by 2017 About FICCI and KPMG Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is the largest and oldest apex business organisation in India. Tomas Halik won Templeton Prize 2014 (i)Tomas Halik, the Czech priest won the Templeton Prize for 2014. The award was announced by the John Templeton Foundation on 13 March 2014 and under the award he will receive 1.1 million Euro. (ii)Tomas Halik (65) is a person, whose work is aimed at seekers, the segment of those asking questions about religious and spiritual issues but unaffiliated with religion or atheism. (iii)Since 1997 Halik has taught the sociology of religion at Charles University in Prague. He authored numerous books like Patience With God and Night of the Confessor. About Templeton Prize (i) The award was established in 1972 by the late Sir John Templeton. The Prize is a monetary award of 1.1 million Euros and is the largest annual award in terms of cash in the world. (ii) It honours a living person for his exceptional contribution of affirming life’s spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical work. (iii) The first winner of Templeton was Mother Teresa in 1973. The two recent winners were Nobel Peace Prize laureates Desmond Tutu in 2013 and the Dalai Lama in 2012 10. India-China SED dialogue to focus on high speed rail tracks (i)India and China will hold the third round of their strategic economic dialogue here this week aimed at raising the speed of Indian trains and improving heavy haul operations and rail stock. (ii) Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia arrived here today for the Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) to be held here on 18 march. (iii)Five working groups covering different areas are finalising the details for the high level economic and trade dialogue between the two countries. (iv) The working groups covered areas like infrastructure, mainly the railways and operationalise the agreement for service centres to be set up in India for Chinese power equipment, environment and resources protection, water management and policy coordination, collaboration on planning and urbanisation, cooperation in high technology including the IT sector.
