BUCKEYE RETRO SERIES (BRS) … MMW … Race # 4 By Larry Mattingly DAVE GARDINER GARNERS TWO IN BRS COMBO RACE AT MMW Hometown ace Dave Gardiner became the fourth different driver in as many races to score double wins in Buckeye Retro Series (BRS) action, driving to victory in the Saturday, Nov. 9, North/South series Combo event at Mark Kitto’s Mark’s Model World (MMW) raceway in Canton, Ohio. Greg Fox picked-up the win in the companion Retro-Flexi contest. FORMULA ONE / INDY RESULTS QUALIFYING Prior to the F1/Indy qualifying session Mark Picione was a bit apprehensive about using his new Difalco controller. It was needless worry, as Picione led a group of eight competitors who managed to qualify in the five second bracket on the demanding 16 foot, relatively flat, King track. Picone’s 5.021 just edged Ron Hershman’s 5.026 and Tom Lauterbach’s 5.033. Mike Panko (5.048), Mark Gardiner (5.053), Ron Smith (5.076), Willy Custer (5.089), and Dave Gardiner (5.093) rounded out the top eight qualifiers. The elite eight just missed Ron Hershman’s track record mark of 4.994. 1. Mark Picione – 5.021 2. Ron Hershman – 5.026 3. Tom Lauterbach – 5.033 4. Mike Panko – 5.048 5. Mark Gardiner – 5.053 6. Ron Smith – 5.076 7. Willy Custer – 5.089 8. Dave Gardiner – 5.093 9. Greg Fox – 5.125 10. Bud Bartos – 5.151 11. Dave Simerka – 5.156 12. Ross Scharf – 5.183 13. Jeff Lauterbach – 5.189 14. Dan ‘Pops’ Myers – 6.074 FORMULA ONE / INDY MAINS Note: The MMW Track Mate timing and scoring system does not provide complete heat-by-heat results. Thus, we were not able to do the normal comparison results story. C-Main This nine-man round robin main essentially ended up as a battle between Larry Mattingly and Frankie Schaffier for the top spot, as both racers were in a dead heat going into the final two segments of the contest. Schaffier finished on purple and black, while Mattingly ended on orange and white. That proved to the tale of the tape, as Mattingly pulled out to a three lap cushion at the checker. Mike Duke had a solid run to finish on the podium, five laps down, while Matt Easterday continued to make progress, finishing fourth. Dan Myers salvaged fifth, despite having the front axle torn off his car twice in grinding crashes. Earl Graybill was sixth, in front of Dan ‘Pops’ Myers, Bob Summers and Ken Kanyok. Both Summers and Kanyok experienced mechanical problems throughout the race. FAST FACTS… 1. At the finish Lauterbach and Simerka ended up tied with 259-laps, with Jeff getting the nod on track position, finishing six sections better than ’Shadow’ Dave. The pair swapped the lead back and forth throughout the contest, but the black lane was the deciding factor. Lauterbach turned in a 32-lap effort, while Simerka struggled, getting only 29 markers in the gutter. Bartos ran a strong race, but fell three laps short at the end to finish third, one-lap in front of MMW racer Scott Lemon. And, the race was as close and hotly contested as expected, with a margin of only four laps between the first and sixth place finishers. When the dust settled local hot shoe Dave Gardiner held off Ron Hershman by two-laps (267 to 265) to annex his first BRS victory. Gardiner and Hershman raced each other even across the board, with the exception of the yellow lane where Gardiner slammed the door with a 35 lap effort, compared to Hershman’s 32-laps. Another local racer, Ron Smith took third place, nipping Tom Lauterbach by just seven sections on track position. Both drivers registered 264 laps. Mike Panko and top qualifier Mark Picione also finished in tie for fifth, with Panko getting the nod on the virtue of track position. Mark Gardiner squeezed by Willy Custer for seventh, while Greg Fox finished ninth after experiencing mechanical ills on the blue lane. Gardiner fell one-lap short of equaling Ron Hershman’s Formula One/Indy track record of 268 laps. FAST FACTS… 1. A dozen entrants, who call MMW home, competed in the BRS event, with Dave Gardiner winning both the F1/Indy and Can-Am races. Five MMW racers qualified into the F1/Indy A-Main, while four raced in the Can-Am A-Main. MMW boasts the strongest weekly retro racing program in the nation, attracting 15 plus racers on a regular basis … The MMW 161 foot King track, built by owner Mark Kitto, continued to live up to its reputation as being a true drivers track, as virtually every turn is a challenge, and the ‘finger’ is still the toughest corner to master in retro racing … Mark Kitto was the consummate host with his up beat personality dominating the Saturday event. Mark provided food for the racers all day Sat., and also had free hot dogs, pasta salad and chips on hand for those who practiced on Friday … MMW was a bee hive of activity. Aside from the BRS contest there was a well attended hard body FCR race Friday evening on the oval, and a number of casual racers renting time on their flat track on both days … How important is practice and testing? Most racers will tell you that it is imperative if one expects to be successful. REM regulars George Katzakis and Larry Kowicki arrived on Sat. morning just as qualifying was ready to begin. Neither driver had turned a lap of practice. Katzakis ended up winning the Can-Am C-Main, while Kowicki duplicated that performance in the D-Main … Good to see Steve Radcliffe aka ‘Scuz’ back in action after a long absence … Florida visitor Brian Ambrose, the only racer attired in shorts on a brisk Ohio weekend, was again on hand, and qualified into the Can-Am A-Main. Brian tips that he will be moving to St. Louis in the near future … Another mystery solved. While chatting with Mike Panko, he revealed that the former Seven Caves Raceway Ogilvie King and Hill Climb tracks, formerly located in southern Ohio, are now at Speed Freaks Raceway in Greely CO. The King track is a mainstay on the Rocky mountain retro circuit … BRS racer Ross Scharf announced that he will soon be opening a new raceway in northern Ohio. Ross purchased a 148’ reverse Engleman that was housed in Tennessee. Many who have previously raced on the track give it high marks. While the new store location has not been determined, Ross said it will be called HIGH BANK RACEWAY … The BRS prides itself on efficiency. Despite 60 entries, which necessitated seven mains (four of which were round-robins), it had those racers running F1/Indy and Can-Am out the door and on the road by 6:15 PM … The BRS has announced that beginning with race #6 in Jan. at MMW, it will no longer be ‘officially’ sanctioning a third class of racing at race meets. Participating BRS tracks may run additional classes following the BRS event, but those races will be totally under the supervision of the host track… Like to give a shout out to Greg Fox,who gave the BRS officials a helping hand in lining up cars for time trial runs. Much appreciated … Also, again, a thank you to Shontel Howard for keeping everyone abreast of results throughout the day. And, as Dan Myers found out, don’t be late relaying the results to her. NEXT RACE: BRS North … Race #5 Sat. Dec. 14 … Route 93 Raceway, Akron, OH * This race will also be the second leg of the American Raceway Series , and a warm-up for the March 1-2 ‘All Star / Invitational’ Classic *
