BUSINESS NEWS UPDATE @ 4PM WITH ORANGE UGANDA UGANDA 144TH: Uganda has emerged 140th on the latest Transparency International 177-country Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 which serves as a reminder that the abuse of power, secret dealings and bribery continue to ravage societies around the world. Denmark and New Zealand topped the list again as least corrupt while Somalia, North Korea & Afghanistan tied at 177th. DECEMBER CBR: Bank of Uganda has today reduced the CBR by 50 basis points to 11.5% from last months 12%. This has been revealed today by the bank’s deputy governor, Dr Louis Kasekende who said the bank expects inflation to drop in the coming 2-4 months to 5.5%-6.5% from November’s 6.80%. BRAZIL ECONOMY: Brazils economy fell into contraction in the third quarter, with output shrinking by more than analysts had forecast, according to official state figures. APPLE BUYS TOPSY: Apple has bought social media data analytics firm, Topsy Labs, which specialises in using data from Twitter to track customer sentiment. Topsy is one of the few firms to have access to Twitters entire data stream. It has recently created a searchable database of all tweets sent - more than 400 billion - since Twitters launch. PC SALES: Global shipments of personal computers (PCs) are expected to see their most severe yearly contraction on record in 2013, according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC). The firm said sales of PCs would fall by 10.1% this year, worse than the previous estimate of 9.7%. PC sales have fallen for the last six quarters, the longest historical drop.
