// BY.. Wavel Joseph Woodcock Steel knives, mirrors, copper kettles, sugar for land. A metaphor for Seychelles today: History has a habit of repeating itself. When the white man came to America, they discovered that the Land was already inhabited by Native American (American Indian). The Europeans with the intent of conquering this new continent devise a manipulative and seductive plot to earn the American Indian trust and steal their land right under their noses. The Native Indian who were not accustom to many European invention such as steel knives, mirrors, copper kettles and even sugar were fascinated by these Items. To the point that they were willing to accommodate the European to such extent, that they allow them to come in and even help them to settle on their land. But the European who disregarded all respect for the valued land and resources and instead displayed insatiable greed and arrogance. ce eventually resort to brutal attacks to take over the Land for themselves much to the loss of the Native population. Many Seychellois people today are under the same type of manipulation. We need to be careful not to fall under the manipulation that the Native American did. In olden days the Indian people sell their soul, dignity, land and right for copper kettle, sugar, mirrors and steel knives. Today we are selling our Land, right and Dignity for a washing machine, a loan, a house, some iron sheets or for a few thousands rupees. Some are even selling their soul to religion for R45, 000 to R75, 000 rupees not knowing the price they will later pay. The European came to America as wolves in sheep clothing. They used gadgets to deceive and manipulate people; today the government and foreign invaders are using money. But how steep of a price are we going to pay..
