BYOB - MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS - Part 2. Continuing from yesterday: Myth 3 – I’m not creative I’m not talented If you are going to sell cakes and/or cookies; if you are going to sell t-shirts on eBay; if you are going to run “park your kids” service, my questions to you are, “What creativity do you need? What talent do you need?” Ultimately, all you need is to be good in what you are doing and do it seriously so that people will pay you $$ for it. Everyone has talent. Everyone is creative. And they are expressed in everything we do. People tell me all the time it is easy for me to say because I am a good communicator. Little do they know that I stood in front of the mirror probably a thousand times to practice when I first started. I have talent. I am creative. But I’m also very hardworking! Myth 4 – I’m not cut out to be a businessman Are you married? If you are, then you must be a great salesperson! After all, you convinced your spouse to spend the rest of his / her life with you. That’s not an easy feat! Everyone who can sell is a businessman. Since you are already selling yourself everyday, you are already a “businessman.” All of us can sell and, trust me, when you have something that you are so passionate about, you will talk non-stop. Myth 5 – S/He is so lucky S/He is lucky. S/He was “in the right place at the right time.” Being in the right place at the right time is pointless if you do not also do the right thing. Being in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing is not being lucky. In one word, it’s called “planning” and it requires lots of hard work. Myth 6 – This is not the right time There is no right time nor wrong time to start your own business. Any time is the right time. To those waiting for the right time, the right time will never come. Myth 7 – Do and sell something new Some people think of selling something that is not available in the market. For example, since there are already so many people selling chicken rice, why not opt for selling “crocodile rice”?! (It is to my understanding that crocodile meat is gaining popularity among consumers). You cannot take such risks as a small businessman. Join the crowd, sell chicken rice. But sell it differently. Myth 8 – Small business is for drop-outs(??) This is not true. Many small business owners earn much more than well qualified working professionals and are wealthier than them. Small businesses can also grow to become big, even mega, businesses. And so we have the eight most popular myths against starting small businesses. As we have laid them out on the table, I believe you are better prepared to BYOB.
