Baba Dantiye KANO STATE GOVERNMENT SAVES OVER N3 BILLION ON JAKARA RIVER PROJECT Kano state government has saved about N3.2 billion on the cost of the Jakara river channelization project, which was hitherto estimated to cost N8.7 billion, the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has revealed. Receiving the President, Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, at the Government House in Kano, Gov. Kwankwaso stated that when the project specification and estimates were submitted to the government, a painstaking re-assessment of the project proposal was carried out, as a result of which its design was modified for good. It was because of this modification, he added, that the government was able to save the money, which was channelled to scholarships for students from the state in various tertiary intuitions locally and overseas. He therefore charged members of the society to remain committed to professional excellence so that they can save cost on projects without compromising quality. Gov. Kwankwaso stated that his administration is working closely with members of the Nigerian Society of Engineer in Kano to put in place life-changing projects for the people of the state, adding that the government is also paying more attention to the sector of education so that the state can produce more engineers and other experts in fields of human endeavour. A fellow of the NSE, the governor said he is proud to be associated with the society and promised to be its good ambassador both in government and in the political arena. Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr. Mustafa Balarabe Shehu urged the governor to facilitate a permanent secretariat for the state branch of the society as well as the location of the North-west Engineering Practice Resource Centre in the state capital. Engr. Shehu praised Gov. Kwankwaso for what he described as the monumental transformation in Kano under his leadership and for his support to NSE, hoping the spirit would remain alive.
