Back at Dream Overkill Towers, and recovering slowly from the exertions of yesterdays Power and Glory Festival at The Rock Den in Hatfield. Firstly, I must begin with praise of the venue (great stage, PA and backstage areas for gear etc) The room is big, but not boomy. The PA guys were excellent and made us confident that the sound was great out front, where it matters! Dean and the staff of the venue were all friendly and helpful - smiles all round, working cheerfully to help make the event run smoothly. I also liked the Brazilian food van - nice to try the different stuff available; Doughnut tubes filled with hot chocolate or caramel, anyone? :) We missed the first band, Sonic Scream, because we were stuck in the M25 car park, Grrr! However, we managed to see every other band all the way to the majestic finale of Witchfynde. We had a wonderful feast of music, with each band offering its own take on the wonderful creative thrust of the early NWOBHM days. We enjoyed bone-crushing riffage, twin-lead guitar, thunderous drums, anthemic choruses and screaming vocals. It was a pleasure to be part of it. Toledo Steel, neighbours of ours from Southampton - A great set from a talented young band inspired by the NWOBHM greats Midnight Messiah - A tough act to follow! We were getting ready to go on next and they were solid and powerful, even though we were listening from backstage most of their set Our set just seemed to fly by! Niggling problems with guitar pedals and the Bass sound onstage were soon overcome as we blasted through our songs - somehow missing out Elemental! (Note to self - printed setlists are very useful for old musicians!) Loved it! Ruler - all the way from Milan, this young band were a revelation. They played the way we would play if we still had the energy! It was a pleasure to see such talented musicians so into the spirit of NWOBHM come roaring onto the stage and proceed to tear through song after song at great speed. Fantastic stuff! Meeting the guys offstage, they are humble and respectful, not a trace of arrogance - they deserve to go on to great things Soldier - I think this was the best performance I have seen from Soldier, from Ians Dicks lead guitar work across stage to Miles Goodmans irrepressible antics, they were a pleasure to watch. A class act! Sacrilege - What can I say but HEAVY RIFF POWER!!! When this band hit the groove they take no prisoners! You want irresistible crushing power? They got it! Deep Machine - Powerful riffs, strong vocals and some tasty lead guitar make this band well worth a metalheads attention. The song Hell Forest is about Hainault Forest, which made me laugh (I used to live near there myself once) Witchfynde - Thoroughly enjoyed their set. Wonderful delicate guitar work leading to classic riffery from the Steve Howe-like guitarist Montalo got the old headbanging muscles twitching! This event was a success. The venue is perfect for the serious rock and metal fans take seriously. Lets help put it on the national venue map! \m/
