Back doing some carving. Bill Veasey has suggested I master carving duck heads so Im making some Bufflehead ducks. Ive seen several at Assoteague near our cottage and here locally in Pa. Im in the process of carving a dozen or more as he suggested and roughed out 5 bodies. Will turn these into Christmas presents. Here are two live shots I found on line...(dont have the hi-powered telie photo camera & lenses). Notice the unusual head shape. Its caused by special feathers as the actual skull is very similar to most other ducks. The muscles in the neck and head change the way the feathers lay or stand up giving this unusual shape which presents a challenge to the carver.
