Back home in Michigan, the area is known for their apples, - TopicsExpress

Back home in Michigan, the area is known for their apples, cherries, blueberries, asparagus, and other perennial favorites. During my annual visits, Ive noticed an increase of orchards being established. One less field going to corn and soybeans - a win in my book. Additionally, Im seeing more farms opt in to the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP). This initiative helps farms of all sizes and all commodities voluntarily prevent or minimize agricultural pollution risks. This program is designed to reduce farmers’ legal and environmental risks through a three-phase process: 1) education; 2) farm-specific risk assessment and practice implementation; and 3) on-farm verification that ensure the farmer has implemented environmentally sound practices. In Michigan, this program includes farmsteads, cropping systems, livestock, and forests/wetlands/habitats. Anyone have experience with this program or does your state offer something similar?
