Back in 1980, I put together a four-hour radio program on Elvis - TopicsExpress

Back in 1980, I put together a four-hour radio program on Elvis with a DJ in Florida. A labor of love for this fan. My records, knowing, and direction…..and the DJ’s equipment and voice. It was aired a few times in the years since in Florida, Virginia, Texas, and England. In writing it, the way to close the program gnawed at me. Elvis’ death was a relatively fresh wound. The only thing I knew what that it should NOT end with “My Way”. Yet that song was used as a placeholder through the several weeks of production. Seemed my creative juices slowed and inspiration remained just out of reach. Until one Sunday morning and really hearing one of the songs from one of his Gospel Albums. Elvis’ only Grammy awards were for his Gospel albums…an irony for the ages. On one of the two Grammy winning albums was “Milky White Way’. Heard it the fateful Sunday morning…really heard it……and realized it was perfect closing for the radio show. Played it for the DJ and he agreed. We wrapped up the show that week with the playing of this song. The Lyrics are a eulogy. Milky White Way Yes Im gonna walk on the milky white way Oh Lord some of these days Im gonna walk that milky white way Some of these days well well well well Im gonna walk up and take my stand Gonna join that Christian band Im gonna walk on that milky white way Oh Lord, some of these days Im gonna tell my mother howdy, howdy, Howdy when I get home Yes, Im gonna tell my mother howdy, When I get home well well well well Im gonna shake my mothers hand I will shake her hands that day Thats when we walk on the milky white way On some of these days Im gonna meet god the father and god the son Yes, Im gonna meet god the father and god the son Well well well well Im gonna sit down and tell Him my troubles About the world that I just came from Thats when we walk on the milky white way Oh Lord, on some of these days When the song ended, the DJ smiled at me….both of us pleased with the outcome. He picked up the record as would one that understands how to do so and handed it to me. About to put it in the sleeve, it was then I noticed something about the song. Something that surprised me…..stunned me in a way. Showed the DJ and he was just as surprised. Milky White Way Arranged and Adapted by Elvis Presley Well, of course. Happy Birthday, Elvis.
