Back in my college radio days I did an internship at KISS for a summer. A couple of times I sat in with Dale Dorman. To put it mildly, he was the ultimate great in radio. He was naturally animated on-air, most exciting to listen to, and carefully took time to show me how radio is best served. He did his show without headphones, and hit posts (drop off timing up to vocals) on every song perfectly. This is NOT an easy feat sans headphones, kids. I will always remember him advising me not to become dependent on listening to myself on headphones... that they could be a deterrent to sounding natural and sincere on the air. Something like, Just be yourself, Carm, because headphones are a crutch. We have lost a great man both on and off air, and truly a star of the airwaves and beyond. Our Boston hero of radio has left this world to move on to a bigger and better place in the universe. RIP Uncle Dale. Our hearts are broken and you will be sorely missed.
