Back in the days of fourth street right there close to where Wendys is now and before urban development came to pass was the T&H or Tug and Hug as some called it (1960s & early 70s and before). It was a pretty wild place and I always walked on the other side of Center Street (courthouse side) sidewall to stay clear of it because I was young (I lived on 6th.& Center). I remember sometimes Wanda Hall or step-and a half as she was known would stand outside with Lady Diane and at times yell at me when passing. Oh, I just kept on going for fear I reckin, lol. They would hang out at times at the Lincoln Hotel on Center St. towards fifth street too. I really dont know if Wanda had cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy or she was just born with her arm and leg trouble. That really dont matter anyways but I imagine it was hard for society to accept her and the way she walked and maybe it led her into that kind of lifestyle she lived. She used to come into Andersons Carry Out in the late 70s and always acted respectful. I always remembered her wigs of different styles and always heard she built her mom a nice brick home in Flatwoods, Ky.. They were both human beings but just caught up in the lifestyle they explored and lived. You probably heard stories on how they lived and died but lets try to be respectful to their names in a nice way if you comment. They too were a part of Irontons history in a downtown way.
