Back in the stone age, in the 10th grade (third form) we were required to BUY a book called "The Elements of Style" by Wiliam Strunk & EB White. Commonly called "Strunk & White," it taught more than a generation how to capitalize, punctuate and the proper use of the English language. It saddens me that this book is not made available in schools today. This is why we have high school graduates who cannot write a letter or a research paper in their mother tongue. Reflecting on the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman trial, testimony was given by a student on the honor roll at a Dade County (FL) high school who admitted to being functionally illiterate. The average first-year student at Bunker Hill Community College is required to take FIVE remedial English and Math classes before undertaking college-level course work. BTW, for those who fail to learn that pictures are hung and people are hanged, public be-headings are an acceptable punishment.
