Back to School Tips for Parents 1) Most teachers really try hard to do whats best for children. But one year you might find that a particular teacher is not a good match for your child. Just like in every profession if you are not pleased with the relationship your teacher has with you or your child you can ask for a change. Would you keep going back to a dentist or doctor you didnt feel comfortable with? If you are thinking about requesting a class change please consider the following: 1) Request a meeting with the teacher to express your concerns. Your concerns are valid and need to be shared, even if you still are requesting a change. 2) Some principals and schools will not readily honor class change request so please be patient. Put you request in writing to the school administrators and ask that your request is honored in 24-48 hours. Phone calls are ok, but written statements are more powerful. 1). Try to specify the exact reason(s) for requesting the change. Is your child happy in the class but you just dont like the teacher? Make sure the reason is in the best interest if the child. 2) Make sure you are not relying on past experiences of other people. Make your decision on what you think is best, no what a friend whos child had the same teacher 3 years ago tells you. 5). Do not publicly talk about the teacher. Remember the other students and families in the class will not necessarily have the same experience as you. 6). Be open to the new teacher assignment and try not to request someone specific. There are many factors that administrators have to consider when moving students that you will not be privy to. 7) if your request is not honored, ask the school administrator to respond in writing explaining the exact reason(s) your request is denied. You might not agree with the decision but at least you will know why the decision was made.
