Backbend.....Geez it took a second to find a pic where the model wasnt taking it deep as heck! Everybody is different, but the body doesnt need to fit into the pose, the pose needs to fit onto the body. So, the backbend is the maximum EXTENSION of the human spine. I like to stick with the equal and opposite theory in all poses cause when all forces working on an object are equal, that creates equilibrium, which equates to ease in the posture. I like to think each individual vertebra is lifting up and rolling back. If you look at the pick of the spine, (the person would be facing your right), there is a natural curve in the Lumbar spine that allows for natural extension, so your job down there is to lift up and not dump in the low back. Once you get to the Thoracic spine, (thats the part of the spine attached to the ribs), the curve moves in the opposite direction, so I think you should push the chest up and forward and then as you get to the Cervical spine the curve is like the Lumbar curve and you think again about lifting up for length and space. I like to lift my chin up as if I was gonna put it on the ceiling. So, the pose starts with the lift up out of the waist and vertebra by vertebra works its way up to the base of the skull....TO. YOUR. OWN.DEGREE...So thats the spine work, but the shoulder, arms, legs and hips have jobs. Starting at the feet, which we have together, draw the thighs up firmly and draw the tailbone towards the floor. Ive heard different stuff about tightening up the butt, so I did a case study, on myself and found that there is definitely a firming up of the butt, but my conscious effort to draw the tailbone down towards my heels seems to assist in the elongation of the low spine and I have no pain. Coupled with a strong push of the hips forward and a reaching of the arms (elbows locked) to the back wall, (try and drop your arms back by the ears and drop the head back, trust it), I feel as if I am pulling my spine apart. Look at the chick with the lotus flower in the background, she is pressing her hips forward so powerfully, her heels are coming off the ground. See the other bendy chick? Her hips are far forward and her arms are back by her ears. Her pose seems light more balanced, but I dont know cause Im not feeling it.:) Now, the girl in the white pants is getting all the same benefits and if thats where you spine takes you, its perfect. Her hips are forward, her heart is up and her arms are back by her ears...same pose! Now, I am not an expert and dont claim to be. I only have my own practice and love of basic anatomy to guide me and again every BODY is different, every skeletal articulates differently so ask everyone if you have questions about a pose, but really start to study your body and your poses and remember if it hurts, its probably not right for you. After 6 months of devoted practice, my back was so sore my backbend looked like the white pants girl, so I started experimenting and with gentle poses and all the stuff from above I get deeper than ever in the pose and there is NO PAIN! Sorry...this is long as shit...see you tomorrow! 530a, 930a, Noon, and 430p..Peace & Sweat!
