Bad apples. This metaphor is severely misused by police - TopicsExpress

Bad apples. This metaphor is severely misused by police apologists. They use it to mean there are only a few isolated bad cops, the rest are good. The actual metaphoric statement is one bad apple spoils the barrel. What the metaphor is supposed to mean is that if you leave one bad (rotten) apple in a barrel of good apples, the rot will spread to all the good apples, turning them bad. Ironically, by closing ranks and protecting the bad apples (thin blue line and all), this is exactly what has happened. The corruption has spread and the previously (I suppose) good cops will now refuse to do their jobs if it means assisting a good cop whos only sin is to try to expose a bad cop. Bad apple indeed. I think the bad apples have had the metaphorical effect and have now spoiled the bunch. A good cop is not a good cop if they have ignored wrongdoing or corruption within their ranks.
