Bad day today. First, I am unexpectedly placed in an uncomfortable dilemma. The higher echelons of the administration ask me -on two different occasions- if I told my cohorts that next year I would be replacing the department head. I honestly was baffled and had to sincerely offer my word upon almighty God/Allah that I made no such comment. The truth is, I dont accept sinecure positions where salary does not increase, but the name of the job title does. Second, a teacher sparks an argument with me because her daughter - who is in my class - makes a mediocre score on my test. It was past immature, unnecessary, and unprofessional. It bordered the demarcation line of humiliating if not abusive in the manner she sought to relieve her consternation via directly challenging my credibility and ending the argument - in front of other students and nearly the entire staff of the school- with paraphrase I know exactly what to do! Dont worry. (It is exigent to mention the same teacher was complaining about un-professionalism because she was yelled at publicly by a hall monitor in the past). Although I understand marks are very pertinent for the success of a child, the inherent worth of earning a mark and attempting ones best rather than manipulating a system or administration should never rise above the former. Its called being a bad parent! Thirdly, I miss my bus because a parent -waiting outside of the teachers room minutes after the previously aforementioned argument- wishes to kindly complain that in my pursuit of deterring bullying in the classroom - sparked by my specific concern against a single girl who sometimes appears on the borderline of suicide because of bullying, in my and other colleagues observations- I commented that victims of bullying have been driven to employing guns against their classmates which was another reason bullying should be avoided at all cost. The first occurrence was unnecessary and indicates pure jealousy on the part of cowards who employ such nefarious tactics (at an Islamic school at that!). I understand the administration has a right to investigate such a claim in order to quell its proliferation into a heated debate. Yet, it was a bit unnecessary in my opinion. The second , there is no excuse for a teacher to act like an incorrigible child because of her daughters marks on a test. Unconscionable and immoral! The third, I actually -despite sternly believing in the autonomy of the teacher to sometimes employ serious examples to highlight an equally serious point- can understand that at a private school, the parents do have the right to expect a form of extra protection - though not unequal and favorable treatment toward their child alone but to all- for their childrens educational development. Though the complaint was more an unnecessary nuisance than a productive deterrent of an elixir to deviant behavior ( video games causes gun violence argument), the parent does have the right at a private school to demand that level of comfort and security. Nevertheless, welcome to Jordan. I can say that the manseff and normal people are good :) Thats it.
