Bagian pertama essay tuk matkul Language Acquisition dah kelar. Isinya curhat mulu... Monggo klo ada saran/perbaikan. PERSONAL REFLECTION ON LEARNING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) IN INDONESIA I first learned English as a compulsory subject in the first year of junior high school in Indonesia at the age of 12. My first experience of learning English, however, was not hilarious. I used to consider English as a daunting subject. As a result, I did not get myself to learn it seriously at all. However, such experience ceased after I sat in the third year of senior high school when I finally met an encouraging English teacher. Different from the other teachers with whom I had learned English previously, the teacher was so patient, supportive and attentive to his students. Hence, for the first time of my life I found that learning English was totally intriguing. I therefore began to develop profound interest and high motivation in learning English that I subsequently decided to take English program at university. As I was much inspired by the teacher, my initial purpose in learning English at the university was to be an English teacher like him. Regarding the teaching context, it is still common that until now English is taught by non-native speakers in Indonesia. Correspondingly, I was never taught by native speakers of English myself. The only access to native speakers’ talk I had at that time was through virtual media, like movies, songs, and internet resources. As regards the learning outcome, however, all of Australian friends of mine at UC contend that I speak English clearly. In addition, I could also function in writing academic papers quite well. Thus, I suppose that I can regard myself as a somewhat successful EFL learner. Notwithstanding, I was still at the stage of developing the very basic language skills at the start of learning English at the university. However, since I had already memorised lots of vocabulary and understood English grammar before, my English language skills developed quite rapidly. That is to say, the rapid development of my language skills was, I believe, due to the fact that I had already achieved the “linguistic competence” of English language sufficiently, i.e. with respect to my knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar. However, in order to be an active language user, having large vocabulary size and knowing how words are strung together is not enough. To cope with the problem, I did self-regulated practice to augment my “linguistic performance” in English. The two issues, i.e. having sufficient knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and doing self-regulated practice, constitute major ideas to discuss in the sections that follow.
