Bahamas or bust (more...bust more) !!! For the forst time since June 16th, the schedule we take to get south is in our hands and not a bridge operator, marina work schedule, lock operator, or insurance policy and were EXCITED! We left Herring Bay this morning at 2am and sailed guns blazin for 85 miles until just north of Norfolk. It was a stiff 20mph wind gusting higher but it was a quartering tailwind. Oddly, water moves faster than the sailboat so as I sailed I got hit over and over by waves out of sheer blackness from behind me. No moon, no lights. Its a lot like driving backwards, full throttle, in a car with your eyes closed. Very odd feeling thing to adjust to a changing contour without warning. Good day to be tethered to the wheel! It was a very cold 35 degrees for many hours and no relief from wind with a tailwind. Also... Thirsty, thirst... Couldnt drink anything cuz my new waterproof bibs (cheap and poorly made, but dry) had no fly which required me to take off a sweatshirt, two jackets, a neoprene vest, gloves, teather, life jacket, and a black trash bag with fancy arm and neck holes to pee...all while trusting the autopilot to handle the waves and wind...? I dont think so. I didnt want to piss myself either...this aint no marathon, triathlon or ironman race, folks! Gotta smell right unril we get as least far south as Georgia (where I understand they wont notice...culrural norm?) Not judging... But I gotta wear these clothes for at least 2 weeks before a laundry day. The bay were in is story book perfect and filling up with like-motivated snowbirds headed south too. Cant wait to see the Navy Fleet at Norfolk tomorrow!!!
