BAKIT NOON WALANG D.A.P. subalit daming Proyekto si President Gloria Macapagal Arroyol. P2.159 billion Diosdado Macapagal Bridge in Butuan City « on: July 24, 2009, 02:49:47 PM » Share on facebookShare on twitterShare on emailShare on printMore Sharing Services 0 Economic boom continues in this growing and progressive capital city of Caraga region due to the many completed road and bridges projects and the completion of the giant P2.159 billion Diosdado Macapagal Bridge. The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is one of the mega projects of the “Mindanao Super Region” economic development plan that was mentioned by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her 2008 State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA). This contributed a lot to the urban transport needs of commerce and industry in the Caraga region through the efficient flow of businessmen, truckers, people, goods and services among the major growth centers in the northeastern part of Mindanao. The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge was inaugurated in May 2007, along with the Butuan City Bypass Road Project. It crosses the giant Agusan River and three kilometers away from the old Magsaysay bridge. The bridge, which has a length of 907.6 meters and the Butuan Bypass Road Project, was funded through a Special Yen Loan Package from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The new Diosdado Macapagal Bridge has provided a more reliable infrastructure with a greater design capacity and safer traffic measures than the existing bridge while the Butuan Bypass Road also diverted the traffic passing through the center of the city, said Butuan City Mayor Democrito Plaza. “The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge cut short the distance in the hauling of our agricultural products and planted tree species to our plant,” said businessman Carlos Tanjay. It also fast-tracked our hauling business because we no longer pass the heavy traffic at the heart of city,” said Johnjohn Morano, a 10-wheeler truck driver. “The bridge also lessened the heavy traffic jams in the city,” a passenger bus driver said. The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge was among the many physical infrastructure projects the Arroyo administration has invested for the development of the Mindanao Super Region as the country’s Agribusiness Center in the South, said Northeastern Mindanao Public Works and Highways Regional Director Dr. Evelyn T. Barroso. In her 2006 SONA, the President bared her new economic development plan through the Super Regions category. The Super Regions economic plan grouped the country’s 17 regions into four super regions namely the North Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle, Metro Luzon Urban Beltway, Central Philippines Tourism Center and Mindanao as the Agribusiness Center in the South. The fifth Super Region---the IT Corridor, cuts across the north in Baguio City to the south in the cities of Zamboanga and Davao. (PNA) FFC/MUC/mec The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is the longest bridge in Mindanao, which is 3 kilometers upstream of the old Magsaysay Bridge and provides an alternate route across the Agusan River to connect the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway (Surigao-Agusan-Davao road) and the Butuan City-Cagayan-Iligan road. The bridge is gaining popularity as the only cable stayed bridge with steel deck and single tower in Mindanao, and it has a total length of about 10.30 kilometers. It was during the Presidency of Joseph estrada that the project was approved which was lobbied by the city government way back President Fidel Ramos time to decongest the traffic of the more than 50 year old Magsaysay Bridge and create an alternate route. However, it was President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who approved and implemented the project. The bridge was funded through a Special Yen Loan Package from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The project was started on May 6, 2004 and completed in May 2007. The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is envisioned to provide a more reliable infrastructure with greater design and safer traffic measures while the Butuan City Bypass Road will divert the traffic passing through the core of the city. The overall infrastructure project will enhance the urban transport needs for commerce and industries in the CARAGA region by sustaining the efficient flow of people, goods and services among the major growth centres in the eastern part of Mindanao. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inaugurated the newly-completed 2.2 –billion Diosdado Macapagal Bridge and the Butuan Bypass Road project on July 10, 2007, touted by the Butuanons as a legacy that would last a hundred years and make life easier for the whole of the CARAGA Growth Area.
