Ban till Indian occupation: KUSU Srinagar, Apr 07: Reacting to a claim of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the banned Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU) Monday said the group will remain as banned till ‘Indian occupation’ continues. A youth leader of PDP on Saturday, last week, had said that if party comes to power, it will lift ban on KUSU – which was banned in 2010. In a statement issued on Monday, the banned student body said: “KUSU will remain banned, even if this status is removed by the Indian state or any of its functionaries. KUSU will remain so until the Indian occupation of Jammu & Kashmir ends.” KUSU is Kashmir’s largest influential pro- freedom student body based in Kashmir University. In 2010, the authorities dismantled its office in Hazratbal campus of Kashmir varsity. The student body, despite ban, had organized several pro-freedom protests and rallies. Chalking out its ten point charter, the statement issued by the banned student body reads: “KUSU is an independent student organization and has no affiliation with any group, organization, or party in any way whatsoever. KUSU represents the Islamic character of Kashmir and its vision and actions should be subservient to and within the ambit of Islam. KUSU stands for complete withdrawal of India from the territory of Jammu and Kashmir in every form.” “No member of KUSU should be affiliated to Indian government in any way,” statement reads, adding: All students who fulfill the (previous clause) are open members of KUSU and no one can expel them from the Union, except under breach of the charter.” It further read: No member of KUSU shall have any official capacity and KUSU members will not proclaim their membership to anyone, nor represent KUSU anywhere.” The student body claims: “KUSU believes there is no chance of academic improvement or excellence - like other affairs of society - in KU or the education system as a whole, until J&K remains under Indian occupation and influence.” “KUSU is an open platform to discuss and debate the issues relating to students, politics, and society. KUSU represents the aspirations of students of Kashmir, belonging to all institutions, colleges, universities and schools of valley, and will always speak for their justice and honour,” adding: “KUSU will always act as the intellectual guardian of the people’s rights and aspirations and will act as a beacon of warning, wherever needed, against any attempt to harm the integrity and honour of Kashmiris.” Though the student wings of pro-India political parties are functioning openly in Kashmir, the pro-freedom KUSU have been banned and government seems in no mood to lift the ban
