Band T-Shirts In My life Pt 5 (29/3/2014) in what will probably be an endless series. The best thing you can say about Neil & Crazy Horses Greendale is that it was a silly indulgence. Us Neil Nutters convinced ourselves at the time that it was - as usual - a work of genius and then have probably never played it again since 2003. The subsequent Australian tour was well summed up by a wit who remarked that it was Neils Rock Eisteddfod but it did give a bunch of my music journo mates the opportunity to dress up and stand onstage as extras. This I didnt realise at the time until John ODonnell told me he was smiling at me the whole first half. I asked how this was so and he told he was Farmer Fred (or some such) onstage. I ended up with the best seats Ive ever had at the Entertainment Centre - five rows from the front, dead centre on the floor. It was a posse that included Dennis Atkins, Victoria Wilkinson, Mark Lucas, Larry Writer, Jim Middleton and others who escape me at this moment. After a break Neil bought out Crazy Horse and for the next 45 minutes destroyed my mind with some of the most ferocious and intense RAWK Ive ever experienced. I remember Dennis leaping into the air as they hit the first notes. And they were L-O-U-D. At one point I was within five seconds of having to leave as the sheer volume was hurting my physically. One of our party later confessed that he couldnt take it and left. As always Crazy Horse clustered as if they were onstage at the Hopetoun and not the expanse of the Ent Centre stage. I spent most of the night enthralled at Billy Talbot, chewing gum and lost in some reverie. And I fantasised at being able to eavesdrop on a conversation when this bunch sat down to chew the fat. This is the shirt I bought that night. Its aged better than the Greendale album. But that night - for 45 minutes of genius - Neil & Crazy Horse ruled the known and unknown world.
