Bands of heavy rain continue to pass over the Central and Eastern - TopicsExpress

Bands of heavy rain continue to pass over the Central and Eastern Division this evening. The latest Radar image shows the rain confined mostly to the eastern half of Viti Levu and the western Koro Sea. The rainfall chart published by Fiji Met for the 24 hours to 9am this morning shows 177mm at Nausori, most of which fell after 2am this morning. The rain is much more intense than expected, a result of fresh to strong low level trade winds pushing moisture onto the Tailevu and Rewa coast, supported by divergence in the upper levels caused by a strong jet stream over waters between Tonga and Fiji. The most recent forecast indicate a low pressure centre will form later tomorrow over waters east of Vanua Levu close to the northern islands of Tonga. At this stage the future of this low remains unclear, but most likely scenario at this time is slow eastward movement with the centre passing south of Samoa but with only slight intensification. Indications are the heavy rain will peak tonight after dark before starting to ease tomorrow morning. A slow and gradual clearing will continue through the day tomorrow as the strong jet stream winds move away to the east, and by Monday weather will improve further as rain clears away.
