Baptists (particularly John Leland, an adviser to James Madison) were instrumental in the passing of the First Amendment to our Constitution, and have, until recently, offered strong support for the separation of church and state. The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty carries on that great tradition. When my family lived and worked in College Park, MD, we were privileged to meet and support the leaders of this organization - at the time James M. Dunn was Executive Director; Oliver Buzz Thomas was Chief Counsel. Brent Walker was also on staff, and has been the Executive Director since 1999.
