Bapu Nachhatar Singh Ji (Amar shaheed jathedar Bhai Gurjant Singh budhsinghwala Jis Father) talking about his son in an interview: Gurjant went his own way because he was a dedicated, devoted Sikh. However, prior to 1984, an incident had taken place at Bibi Kahan Kaur gurdwara in Moga in which eight Sikhs were killed by the BSF and the CRPF. One of our elderly relatives had been helping with their bhogs, and thereafter the police picked him up and tortured him. Gurjant went underground at that time. I was arrested and sent to Ferozepur jail [he showed me the burn marks on his legs, the legacy of his stay there]. I was acquitted during Barnalas period in office. But after the Barnala government lost power, terror was let loose. All our family were beaten publicly and my brother was killed in custody while Gobind Ram was DSP here. For three years we couldnt come to our land or our house and none were allowed to rent the land either. We stayed with relations and the whole village took it in turn to give us our meals. The police had removed the hand pump and all our kitchen utensils and the tube well. Gurjant had only 1 and a half years education but he had learned further while in jail. At Akali conferences he had come to know Kulwant Singh Khukhrana B.A. and they had become like brothers while underground. Later Manohar Singh Tira advised him. He had always been influenced by religious persons throughout his life and he was not the type to murder people indiscriminately. He thought that Hindus who speak Punjabi should be allowed to stay in Punjab. Only he wondered why those who participated in the massacres of 1984 were not punished. This is why the divide is deepening, he thought. He thought they are responsible for that deepening divide.
