Barb Tomlinson What a night. We left CCBM at 6:15 PM and headed out for a hour and half ride to Levera National Park. This park is at the north east corner of Grenada. We sat on the beach and waiting for the researchers to spot a turtle and show us the way. Not like Disney you have to wait and hope that one will come. After a few minutes the call was sent out and we were trekking down the beach to see a turtle. She was an 800 pound Leather Back turtle and we were not more than 5 feet away from her as she dug her nest. Then she deposited apporx 90 eggs (one researcher was counting) and buried the eggs. She then began to camouflage the nest by throwing sand behind her packing it down make a small turn then doing it again. Making a complete 360 turn before heading out to sea. This whole process took over an hour. One of the many amazing things was this was all done on instinct. She did it all with her back flippers not seeing what she was doing. We were allowed to actually touch her. So smooth is her shell. The opportunity to see nature at work is awe inspiring. To be so close to this wild ugh creature and not be afraid WOW I wish I could have taken pictures but we were only allowed red lights and NO FLASH. It was a night Dan and I will not forget. One more thing as of last night there were appox 200 nests on the beach and there was another hugh turtle digging her nest on the way back. Out of 1000 hatchlings only 1 will make to back to this beach and lay her eggs.
