Baroque architecture began in the late 16th century in Italy and grew in popularity through out Europe and Latin America. It drew heavily upon Renaissance architecture, but added its own distinct, theatrical flourish. With the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic church felt threatened at the time and therefore started the Counter Reformation. With this Counter Reformation they sought to use the budding Baroque style, and its embellishments, as visible statement of the wealth and power of the Church. As well as to inspire emotions of awe and wonder within their followers.
