Baseball fans may find this interesting. And now you know the rest of the story. A cut and paste I put together for all my Seattle Mariner fans: David Arias graduated from Estudia Espallat High School in the Dominican Republic and in 1992 he was signed by the Seattle Mariners. David Arias has stirred up a lot of excitement with his hitting for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Arias showed he could hit in his second season with the Peoria Mariners of the rookie-class Arizona League. The young first baseman led Seattle’s Midwest League farm club in average (.331), hits (134), home runs (17), runs batted in (80), total bases (218) and runs scored (80). One coach states “He’s fun to watch, It’s possible to pitch to him. But if he gets a hit, it might go 800 feet.” In 1995, he was named Seattle’s player of the year at Peoria, Arizona. The next year, Baseball America called him the best defensive first baseman and most exciting player in the Midwest League in July 1996. He played for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Mariners farm team, until 1996 when he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. On September 13, 1996, after hitting .320 in 130 games with 18 homers and 93 runs batted in, the Twins acquired Arias as the player to be named later from an earlier trade of Dave Hollins who batted .351 in 28 games after joining the Seattle Mariners. Hollins then signed with the Angels as a free agent to start the next season. When Arias arrived in Minnesota, he informed the Twins that he preferred to be listed as David Ortiz. And now you know, the rest of the story.
