Baseball story follows for those who are fans and have a minute to read. I think the year was 1993 and I was working for Allen Test Products in Kalamazoo. My boss was a friendly and amusing fellow. Well call him George, because that was his name. George had a son who played high school baseball for Kalamazoo Central. One day George was boasting about the team and playing up how good they were. George went on to single out one kid in particular, and it went something like this. Hes great! Hes the best high school baseball player in Michigan, maybe the whole Midwest. Hes already been getting interest from the big leagues. The Yankees sent scouts to watch him play. Hes going places. Hes a future big leaguer, hes that good! Now George could spin a good story, and he had many. Like a bad TV bio-drama, they were usually based in reality, then stilted with a good measure of artistic liberty. Knowing this, I asked, OK George, whats his name? To which he replied, Jeter. Derek Jeter. Remember his name. I did. And George, where ever you are, I concede. You were right. In fact, this may be one time you actually UNDER exaggerated. So I write this out of respect for Derek Jeter, perhaps the best player of his generation, who is playing his last series in Detroit, barring an unlikely playoff match-up. What a career.
