Basic Wilderness Skills – July 20 – Minneapolis Essential elements to thriving in the natural world are fire, water and shelter. Comfort in wilderness environment requires mastery of these foundational skills. This afternoon course will discuss these elements in depth and explore multiple approaches to fulfilling these basic needs. Hands-on practice is the focus to create confidence and reinforce these skills for real-world application. Expect an afternoon in the woods along the Mississippi river in south Minneapolis. Practical Rifle – August 11 A well rounded approach to riflemynship entails knowledge of how to use the tool in practical situations. The rifle as a tool of self defense is a skill that has a historical basis in American heritage, and continues to develop with new styles in the modern age. This course will cover how to use a rifle or carbine quickly and effectively at common practical ranges. Students will be working towards high accuracy as an individual and as a team and will learn techniques perfected by the modern warrior’s hard earned knowledge. Tracking and Awareness – August 18 High awareness is the foundational ability to observe one’s surroundings with detail and knowledge. It is a prerequisite to developing tracking ability as you can only track what you can observe. Exercises in heightening one’s awareness can be life changing; Especially as one accounts for the damage modern life has inflicted upon our ability to experience our world to the fullest. With awareness skills, tracking comes more naturally as it is an ancient form of communication- perhaps the first form of a written language- a language written on the ground, the foliage, and in intuition. Traditional Rifle – September 7 The mastery of the modern rifle comes through dedication to learning the fine elements of the craft. A traditional riflemyn can hit targets from 500 yards with open sights without the use of artificial support or special ammunition. This course emphasizes field shooting and the building of true skill as opposed to reliance on equipment and optimal conditions. All experience levels will be challenged and will improve their marksmynship significantly. Students will need to bring a rifle (preferably semi-auto magazine fed), and 250 rounds of ammunition. Limited rental equipment may be available on a first-come first serve reservation for $20. Medic – September 8 (WINONA, MN) and September 28th (MINNEAPOLIS, MN) The ability to respond a medical crisis promptly and effectively is key when an injury occurs. This course will cover basic first aid, common herbal remedies to aid in trauma, proper stabilization and safe movement of the patient. Techniques from the modern emergency medical field, traditional medicine, and tactical combat casualty care (TC3) will provide a effective basis for knowing how to deal with small wounds to massive trauma when you are the only care-giver. Land Navigation – September 14 Orientation is often taken for granted in a culture of roads, global positioning systems and maps. Often times, found without one’s normal bearings it is easy to become disoriented. The ability to move between points over rough ground without man-made landmarks is a skill that brings confidence and opens doors to exploring some of the most hidden places. This course will develop skills for navigating using natural features and techniques, as well as using a map and compass- in the day and in the dark. Wilderness Survival – October 1-2 Survival is only the beginning- working towards thriving takes a mastery of the foundational elements of taking care of your basic needs with limited resources in a natural environment. The classic trio: water, fire, shelter come first. But we can’t neglect proper mental care and food procuring either. We will practice in depth multiple approaches to meeting these needs so that they may come more naturally when needed. From primitive fire starting to sleeping in a self-made debris hut- students can expect a fun and empowering weekend.
