Bass Pro Shops have their yearly rod and reel trade in sale that they time to compete with Toronto Sportsmens Show and the Spring Fishing Show. I have an issue with this type of sale. They want you to bring in your old rod and reel and give it to them for a discount on a new rod and reel. Your old rod and reel must be in working order. The discount is never fair value to what your tackle is worth. In the old days you would hand down your old tackle to your kids or your neighbours kids. We do not do that as much anymore. Instead we buy poor quality tackle branded with Disney movie themes that are only sufficient to catch small fish when kids are 4-8 years of age. Seldom are kids that are 9-15 getting hand me down rods and reels anymore. This contributes to the lack of fishing experiences kids get. I have tried for four years to find out if Bass Pro will donate rods and reels from this sale tactic to OFAH tackle share or Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassador Tackle share. Every year I get the run around by the GM and Community and Event managers. So I see in this years flyer that they (the corporate office) give Thanks to all participating vendors (Bass Pro) for benefitting our local youth organizations. to date, we have donated over 181,006 items! this stat includes all of North American Bass Pro Shops and an item can be a rod or reel so a combo counts for 2 (thus 90,000 rods and reels in the history of all of Bass Pro North American wide). In comparison the Toronto Sportsmens Show gave out 6000plus new reels and rods a year for 11 years total approx. 70, 000 combos to the Catch Fishing Week Events across Ontario in July. Why am I bringing this up? Do not trade your rod and reel into Bass Pro....likely scenario is they are not even participating in the head offices program to give back to communities. If anyone on this forum volunteers with a fishing organization that received tackle through bass pro I would love to know about it, stand corrected, and eat my words. My advice is this... if you have old tackle hand it down to kids you know. If you have extra donate it to OFAH tackle share. Support the local trade shows like Toronto Sportsmens Show and the Spring Fishing Show because they give back to Ontario communities far more often and in value than corporate Bass Pro Shops do. If you read this far thanks for reading my rant but its frustrating watching a corporation manipulate the market with what I perceive as false community support marketing.
