Bat Colony destroyed in Gatton Email from our carer Gabi Hi all These are the pics (not great from my phone) taken today of what was once the Gatton Flying Fox colony living in a riparian zone on the outskirts of town. All of the trees have been felled, dozed, buried or chipped. The few trees in the distance house bats however as you can see from a couple of pictures even healthy eucalypts are being cut in the name of vegetation modification. Pete has spoke to the authorities and apparently all regs were supposedly in place. Parks were present as was the responsible person that says yes you are doing everything right. That person was Katrina Fauwkes-Leng from Bat Con (Pres). We were not notified nor was there anything in the paper. But I might add here that she call Pete for rescues in that area. Council are laying off (20 in the past weeks) so council environment staff cant say boo. Pete and I have been actively fighting to preserve this colony from council and to date we had managed this. No wonder they asked someone from Mount Tambourine. Tim (New Nature) did a report for the council 18 months ago recommending no dispersal. This colony of about 4000 is not devastated. The nearest colony at Laidley apparently suffered the same fate. We have been advised that there are 100s of call from Gatton residents that there are bats hanging in their back yards and they want them gone. There is another set of trees opposite where the colony was not doing any harm which are situated right outside a child care centre. No provision has been made to manage this in any way. If we had known we could have had media there and at least documented it all. Now it is a given. We have approx 2000 highly pregnant females without a home. This council has now also directed the environmental levy collected on our rates into the general pool and not specifically for environmental purposes.
