Bates College Job Posting: Multicultural Alumni Engagement & Special Projects We are now searching for a new Associate Director of Multicultural Alumni Engagement and Special Projects who will report to me, the Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer. Associate Director of Multicultural Alumni Engagement and Special Projects Department Office of Equity and Diversity Resources Job status Full Time, Full Year Date Opened 2/6/2014 Summary and Scope of Position: Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer and working within the Office of Equity and Diversity, The Associate Director of Multicultural Alumni and Parent Engagement and Special Projects will be joining Bates at an exciting time during which we are reimagining, reorganizing, and creating a cross-institutional strategy to achieve a more inclusive community for current Bates students, alumni, and their families. A member of a dynamic and newly formed team comprised of members from the Office of Intercultural Education and the Dean of Students office, the Associate Director will play a leading role in developing programming that connects alumni to current students as well as developing programming exclusive to alumni and parents. The Associate Director collaborates with a broad range of offices and groups, including the Alumni and Parent Engagement team within the Office of College Advancement. The successful candidate will manage a comprehensive program to research, synthesize, and encourage involvement and participation among alumni from traditionally underrepresented groups. Further, the successful candidate will excel at program design, hold a natural affinity and talent for handling data, and will be excited by the prospect of developing cross-departmental programming meant to serve current students, alumni, and parents. Travel and some weekend work is required. This position will be required to handle confidential information. Key Professional Functions: •Advance a program of outreach to diverse communities, including but not limited to the multicultural, LGBTQ, international, multifaith and first generation college constituencies, enhancing the college’s efforts to link the communities in mutually beneficial ways. •Integrate the activities of those alumni groups into the overall strategy of alumni and parent engagement at Bates. •Work with Leadership Gift Officers and Bates Fund Gift Officers to integrate alumni from underrepresented groups into the cultivation pipeline of their prospect pools, as appropriate; advise Advancement colleagues on cultivation and solicitation practices of underrepresented and affinity groups. • Develop a structure for volunteer recruitment, motivation, training, and stewardship with an eye towards increasing volunteerism. •Plan and manage events such as on- and off-campus workshops for volunteers, stewardship events for mentors, regional gatherings, volunteers and donors and group reunions, and programming during larger, annual Homecoming, Parents & Family Weekend, and Reunion events. •Come to deeply know and understand Bates culture, current priorities and initiatives of the faculty and administration. •Participate in departmental and professional training programs to increase expertise in the profession when appropriate. • Oversee special projects on behalf of the Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer as needed. •Other duties as assigned by the AVP. Necessary Qualifications: ESSENTIAL SKILLS: The candidate will be an energetic individual with initiative, have exemplary writing skills, strong organizational, strategic, and communication skills, and will have experience in institutional advancement or equivalent service/public relations work with donor/volunteer constituencies. The candidate must be able to work independently to create a program that reaches the established mission of the Office of Equity and Diversity, supports the goals of College Advancement and Alumni and Parent Engagement, and advances the priorities of the institution. The candidate must be highly collaborative and be able to demonstrate capacity to develop and sustain relationships with diverse communities. Further, the candidate must be able to develop and manage programs, conduct research; and have familiarity with computer systems. Flexibility and a sense of humor is essential. We seek a candidate who is hard working, collaborative, creative, and can contribute to the team’s dynamism. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelors Degree is required with a masters degree preferred. An understanding of best practices in higher education diversity and inclusion work is required. Familiarity with the residential, liberal arts college model is strongly preferred. 3-5 years of work experience in diversity initiative programs and/or advancement is preferred. Facility with database systems, business office software, and reporting software is required.
