Baton Rouge (November 13) – The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is asking residents to prepare themselves for the first dangerous winter weather of the season. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts freezing temperatures for most of the state during the next two nights. The freeze is expected to last several hours each night. “We received several rounds of severe winter weather earlier this year. As we head into the winter months this season, it is important to have your game plan ready for possible problems like power outages and dangerous driving conditions,” said GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis. ”Remember to also check on those who may need help and protect your pets.” Homes and Fire Safety Tips: • Make sure there is proper ventilation for all fuel-burning equipment. • Keep fire extinguishers on hand. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions. • Kerosene heaters should be refueled outside. Keep the heaters at least three feet from flammable objects while they are in use. Protecting your family and neighbors: • Communicate with your family and neighbors during colder temperatures. • Maintain contact with the elderly and those considered at-risk. • Get A Winter Game Plan! Have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. • Identify people with special needs, like those who need extra medical care or those who have no transportation. Protecting your pets/livestock: • Pets should be brought inside your home. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water. • Warm vehicle engines attract outdoor animals and pets. To avoid injury to hidden animals, hit on your vehicle’s hood before starting your engine.
