Bats On the banks of the river, my river, The Medway, Approaching night I used to stand, Waiting for the sunset, Bats flying all around me, Eating mosquitoes and other insects, But mostly mosquitoes. There was a loose board in the roof of my porch, Where the bats would hide during the day. Their poop would gather on the edge of the window ledge. I’d been planning to fix that loose board, for years, but didn’t want to trap any bats inside. Never got to it, no matter now though, because the bats are gone. They say it’s the white nose syndrome that took the bats, I doubt the mosquitoes miss them. But I do.
