Batsman Mahesh Chhetri and seamer Jitendra Mukhiya will join the national cricket team currently undergoing special training in Sri Lanka for the ACC Emerging Teams Cup beginning from August 17 in Singapore. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) General Secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel said the duo will leave in the next two days but their inclusion does not mean replacement for any existing 15-member national squad. Pyakurel said the two have been included to prepare a big pool of players ahead of Qualifiers — World Twenty20 and 50-over World Cup. “Few of our players — including skipper Paras Khadka — have become injury prone but that doesn’t mean that we are seeking replacement for them. They (Mahesh and Jitendra) will join the team as a cover but their inclusion only meant preparing a bigger pool for Qualifiers,” said Pyakurel. While Paras is to recover from his shoulder injury that has limited the allrounder to batting, Pradeep had injured his ankle while playing the Sri Lankan U-23 League for Kurunnegala Youth Cricket Club. He joined the team directly in Colombo. Another opener Subash Khakurel has also been flirting with his ankle injury. Pyakurel said any replacement in the existing squad will only be decided after the final assessment of the team before leaving for the Emerging Teams Cup. “In case a player being unavailable due to injury, replacement can be considered. Our focus is not Singapore but the Qualifiers,” added Pyakurel. Mahesh had made the cut for the first time in two years in the national fold in the 22-member preliminary squad but was axed from the final 15. Jitendra — a former U-19 bowler — is still to break into the national fold. Source: THT online
