Battle of Batina, Baranja, Croatia Memorial Event. November 10th 2014. 11.00 to 1700hrs. There will be a static display by members of The Schwaben Soldaten LHG with uniform and equipment portrayals of participants of that pivotal battle in 1944. Plus a special attendance by The Alte Kamerade German Choir from Osijek. singing songs from that era. Brief Note of Battle. Battle of Batina was a battle of WWII in Yugoslavia. Battle was led for a month, on a narrow front in Baranja, present day Croatia. It was a battle between Yugoslav partisans and the Red army on one side, and the Germans and Ustaše on the other. Conditions of fighting were very heavy because battle was fought on a swampy terrain. Battle ended in an Allied victory, but after enormous casualties on both sides. It had a direct consequences on the Budapest operation. After the victory at Batina, Soviet forces had a great bridgehead on the western bank of Danube river, and they could start a new offensive toward Budapest.
