“Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.” -Dale Carnegie The art of Communication is Talking and Listening. The Lord has given us one mouth and two ears, because listening has a great implication in relationships. Some people just want to talk and talk but do not know how to listen. The Lord has commissioned me to be a counselor/relationship coach, not on my own. I’m certain what attracts people to open up their lives to me even a new acquaintance, even strangers I meet at times approach me to consult their problem because the Lord has gifted me to have a listening ears. I have learned and developed Listening skills by learning first on how to listen to God whom I do not see. Then it became easier to listen to people whom I can see. Listening empowers and causes them to rely on you when they need a person to talk to. I make the practice when listening in making eye contact and my eyes never wander to every person that walks by, for this could be very irritating when someone is talking to you... the feeling that someone is ignoring you. There is one way to know if the person is listening. Talk and not finish what you are saying. If they say, “So, what happened,” they are listening. If they do not notice that you stopped in the middle of what you were saying, that person is not listening. Everyone desires to be heard. When we listen to others, we validate their need to be acknowledged and understood. Deep down inside, we all want to know that we matter, that we are important. Don’t you find that meeting someone who shows interest in what you have to say, you tend to take a liking to them instantly? To be interesting, be interested. Ask questions that other person will enjoy answering. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their accomplishments. Talk LESS about yourself or your family as much as possible. This way people will not avoid talking to you! Dale Carnegie has been my inspiration. His famous book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is my guiding light in this task the Lord has commissioned me.
