Be wary of rogue traders! We were called to a house of a very nice couple, who had fallen victim to a rogue landscaper. The client had received a quotation from this landscaper and feeling happy that the price was competitive agreed for him to undertake the work on their garden. Upon completion the clients were unsatisfied and approached him to rectify some of the issues. The landscaper was unwilling to admit the obvious flaws in his work and became quite angry. Having no luck with him they called me to have a look. On the surface it didnt look as bad as I was expecting, but it looked very amateurish. The cuts around the house were done very poorly, the wall was off square with the house, the pointing was unfinished, all the capping was loose, the paving was unlevel and the pattern was a mess. The real extent of the shoddy work was revealed once we starting lifting the some of the paving to find the slabs were laid on sand with zero hardcore. Once one was lifted more became loose. We spent a day in the garden, re building the wall cutting the edges, fixing the loose capping and several other things. It now looks 100% better, but unfortunately the client has paid out again to get the finish they should have got originally. Please take this story as a good warning when it comes picking a tradesman. Things you should be looking out for when picking someone, make sure you have seen examples of their work, make sure they have an address and landline. Most people nowadays should have a current web site. If a company has been going a while they should be vat registered and check whether they are part of an organisation or governing body. Do they give a guarantee? Are they insured? Dont base your decision on price or if they are just good at selling them selves, ask to see proof and see testimonials. You cant beat recommendation but still make sure they are capable of providing you with what you need doing. Remember if you have paid for a good job you shouldnt expect anything less. PLEASE SHARE
