Bear with me, Gentle Readers, something I have to get off my chest. I have regularly read within these pages some very angry, sometimes hostile and quite vile comments, about political parties or individuals or world events, and I have to admit that I quite often would berate myself because I just couldn’t get that angry about any of it. Then I realised why. Mixed within these angry, hostile and vile remarks there is a deal of hatred and I refuse to hate anyone or anything. Let me explain what I mean. I grieve for the plight of hungry children and for communities who have to walk miles every day for water and, I grieve equally for the governments who do nothing to help, but I don’t hate them. I grieve for those people in our world who live in fear and are oppressed and, I grieve equally for those in power who cause their suffering, I grieve because they are greedy and blind to the need of others, but I don’t hate them. I grieve for the people of Gaza and of Israel and, I grieve that there are extremists who are so blinded by their own selfish ideals that peace seems unattainable, but I don’t hate them. I grieve that even within my own country my own people resort to name calling and violence because of a different political view or religion, but I don’t hate them. I refuse to hate my fellow man. I refuse to be drawn into that mire which ultimately serves no purpose and causes only division and suspicion. Someone once said, do not let hatred into your heart for once you do, it will make a home there. In this year of referendum let’s make hatred homeless.
