Bear with me folks. I am at it again. Praising my kids, because everybody needs all the support they can get privately and publically. We received the parent’s welcome letter for NYU yesterday, Liz hasn’t seen it yet but I am going to post a few sentences from the first paragraph. “I am writing to welcome you…. I am thrilled to report we continue to receive a record number of first-year applicants – 17 applicants for every available place and one of the lowest acceptance rates ever- ranking us among the nation’s most selective colleges and enabling us to assemble a truly dynamic class. Our upperclassmen and recent graduates are no less impressive. In the past few years, for instance, they have received numerous prestigious national and international awards, including the Gates Cambridge, Fulbright, Udall, Beinecke, Goldwater, Soros, Gilman, and Critical Language Scholarships: our students have also received awards for the National Science Foundation, NIH …” We know what a difficult year you had Lizzy with me getting sick among other things and yet you prevailed, kept your priorities in order, and did extremely well at Smith, but wanted to transfer to NYU to be in the city. You always said you would stay at Smith it if was in THE city because Smith is an excellent school too. Anything you kids do enhances your life first and foremost and you are all working so diligently. Jess has been asked to stay in DC one more week to help complete a project at WERF. Her sublet runs out on her apartment though so she will be moving in with Beth’s family, (whose father was the ambassador to Fiji but has now been appointed a director in New Caledonia). Can’t wait to see Portia in New York City and her and Liz’s new apartment. We might leave late this evening or early tomorrow because Liz has agreed to work right up through today to help the owners out at the Shelburne Country Store for their busy annual sidewalk sale. I am getting exciting about going around the house and storage areas and getting out these things I have collected over the years at junk sales and garage sale finds for their apartment. Portia is going to Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum in NYC with a friend today. She heard it was amazing.
