Beautiful conversation with my grandma today! We were talking about exercising and running on treadmills and painful training workouts to get "in shape". She never did "exercise" and is about to turn 94. She said as children we spent our days outside, as a young women I did my chores without the conveniences we have now. We ate fresh food. Spent time with family. She pointed out that few people that exercise live as long as her. It is a valid point and I am intrigued by the women that she is. Here are some things I have noticed while living with my grandma She has a fiery will that allows her to get what she needs. At the same time she can adapt to circumstances that she can not control faster then anyone I know. She was bombed in WWII in England and flooded out in High River this summer. Both events were life changing yet she did not let them change her. She appreciates the things and people around her. At every meal she thanks me for a wonderful meal (some of them are not wonderful). She has a beautiful smile. When her health is an issue she allows her body to fight and rest and creates wellness within her mind that takes over when her body can not continue. She has a financial ledger that she keeps track of all of her spending. (To the penny) She secretly loves my cats even though they get all tangled in her walker. She takes care to cleanse and honour her body everyday. Her bed is always made and her room never messy. She is open to helping and sharing wisdom anytime I ask. If I dont ask she quietly allows me to find my way without concern that I may do it wrong. She wishes to be waited on sometimes (which I think is a wonderful idea) Other times she demands to take care of things herself. She always has a smile and pleasant thank you for those that help even when she does not want the help. Every single morning of her life she has a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. As a child I did not notice the beauty of the women she is because I was to busy playing. As a young women I was too busy doing it my way. Now I am grateful to have these moments to know her and understand the things I could not see before. To see the parts of me that are from her and the parts of her i would love to be within me. Today I had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast!
