Because Im A Murid I, the Murid , have been the smear of the jeering media’s ferocity. The “civilized” depicts me as an ignorant slave of Bamba and the religious thinks of me as a blasphemer. Yet I cherish both opinions with respect because two wrongs don’t make a right. My way of life disturbs the human chameleons that change colors every day. Some call me a fool and some think I’m cool. A myth I am to those who imagine that my being responsible is solely a doom submission to Bamba. My hard work to earn a living and support my family and community back home is likened to a curse that eternally hunts and enslaves me to donating in futile. They think I enrich my Sheikh when in fact I’m the needy. When I willfully work in the farms of Khelcom, contribute in the great projects of Touba, or join forces with my fellow Murids during Magal, they call it exploitation. I guess they just don’t understand. They don’t understand that my philosophy is my own and not a manifestation of my being owned. They don’t understand that my modesty is a denial of their arrogance to judge “the book by its cover.” They don’t understand that my self-esteem and confidence is boosted by my unconditional love and trust for Bamba. They don’t understand that the Dahiras I join and congregate at is my get-away place from all the mischief and miseries of Satan. They don’t understand that the Qassida chanting is my entertainment. They don’t understand that the Baye Lahads I wear makes me proud to be African. They just don’t understand. I guess, as the Irishman said, “It takes time and patience to bring the snail to Jerusalem.” Hopefully someday you will rise above all trivial distractions to see the good in me. You will be less stereotypical and racist towards me. You will see that I’m a social contributor and not a criminal. I, the Murid, am just a soul rebel (against Satan), anti-conformist (against mental slavery and colonization), and neo-revolutionary (to prevail peace on earth). I’m a giver and a freedom fighter. I’m a survivor, teacher, student, and truth seeker. I don’t smoke herbs nor do I sip sizzurp. I send some positive energy to those around me. I nurture my sisters, support my brothers and peacefully defend my community by any means necessary. While you’re jeering at me inside of the box, I’m out here building a new box because the struggle continues. Nevertheless, I would speak freely, consider thoroughly, care deeply, and stand proudly because I am a Murid. Written by Cheikh Ahmadou Mbacke Founder & Executive Producer AlazharTouba
