SCARY: My dishwasher is trying to kill me. With these opening words Science Daily presents research of a potentially disease-causing fungus living in dishwashers, washing machines and coffee machines. A surprising 62% of tested dishwashers contained fungi on the rubber band inside the door, and 56% of the fungi were black yeast known to cause disease and sometimes fatal infections. Another danger is accidental exposure to caustic, poisonous detergents. PubMed presented a case-study of a man who developed respiratory problems after exposure to a cloud of dishwasher detergent powder. The report concludes with the caution that even routinely handling dishwasher detergent is not entirely risk free. We also want to add the warnings from the Environmental Protection Agency: Automatic dishwashing detergents can produce skin irritations or burns, and are poisonous if swallowed. Hand dishwashing detergents are not as harsh as automatic dishwashing detergents but, if swallowed, they can still irritate your mouth and throat and cause nausea.
