Because Our History Matters ***************************** This day in history, October 7, 1780; The Battle of Kings Mountain By 1780, the Revolutionary War moved to the Southern states. British authorities believed that many citizens in this region remained loyal to King George III and would rally to fight alongside an invading British force against the Patriot rebels. This battle was unique, in that it pitted American against American, Patriot -vs- Loyalist... The true spirit of the ][][][% This battle was fought by 1,000 plus Patriot militiamen. Fighting without orders, formal military training, uniforms or provisions, and with no promise of pay; against the supposedly superior loyalist forces of the British Major Patrick Ferguson... The Overmountain Men... They probably could be described as rawboned men, clothed in doeskin, with moccasins covering their feet, long hunting knives belted at the waist. They wore their hair long, tied back with leather cord. Wild beards grew from their cheeks and chin. They were mountain men, frontiersmen, from the west side of the Appalachians. If not for the Overmountain men, and other Patriot militia, there may have only been ten colonies, and instead of a Southern drawl, yall might be speaking with a British accent. It all started with a threat... He said WHAT? Major Patrick Ferguson decided to parole a captured rebel and send him into Appalachian territory with a message, that if the patriots did not desist from their opposition to the British arms, and take protection under his standard, he would: march his army over the mountains, hang their leaders, and lay their country waste with fire and sword. So, they Mustered... Growing day by day to some one thousand strong in number, the militiamen prepared to cross the Appalachian mountains, in late September, committed in their pursuit of the man who had threatened to invade their homeland. The Overmountain Men and the Carolina Patriots pursued Major Ferguson, relying on scouts to report his whereabouts. The Patriot militiamen rode hard and by October 6, they reached their counterparts from South Carolina and joined them along with some thirty Georgia militiamen. The entire party of volunteer Patriots numbered near 1,800... not a single one among them was a Continental soldier or officer. They were the true ][][][%s. Patriot victory... Having fully surrounded the British position at Kings Mountain, they dropped Major Ferguson where he stood, and subsequently halted the further advancement of the British deeper into the South. General Cornwallis was quoted as saying that they fought like animals. When its your liberty at stake, you had better.
