Because about a dozen of you have asked me as your token trans friend if Ive seen Transparent (kisses), the answer is aside from the original pilot, no. I dont have Amazon prime and Im waiting till Im not as busy as I have been to take advantage of the trial membership and marathon the series. But theres been a few debates about the positive or negative aspects of the series, largely centered around the fact that once again a trans woman is played by a cis man. Because I was pretty critical of Dallas Buyers Club and the brouhaha surrounding Letos performance, which for me was about significantly more issues than just the casting, but rather the productions whole approach to the character which led to said casting to begin with. I firmly believe that while in an ideal world, Maura on Transparent could have been played by a trans woman, that the other positives about the show, not the least of which being the sheer volume of industry work that the show has provided for trans people, outweigh the negatives to it. Theres a lot more that I want to say about the realities of the variations in trans experiences, but luckily I dont have to because the delightful Jen Richards already said them all in this interview. Im glad she mentioned Hit & Miss because its a series I stumbled upon on Netflix and devoured and wished there was more of. Im glad I was able to watch it detached from Sevignys commentary mentioned here.
