Because of a landmark ruling by Mexicos Congress earlier this week, military abuses against civilians will result in full prosecution in civilian courts. This ends decades of impunity granted to soldiers who murdered, raped, tortured and forcibly disappeared hundreds of people, and evaded justice through the separate military justice system. Amongst the many notorious cases of military abuses, this will bring justice to the indigenous women of Guerrero who were raped and tortured by Mexican soldiers in the early 2000s. This is also a promising step forward to address the ongoing violence affecting civilians due to the militarys war on drug cartels.
