Because of your signature, the Obama administration is taking - TopicsExpress

Because of your signature, the Obama administration is taking unprecedented action to stop Female Genital Mutilation in the US. Every year in the United States, thousands of young girls have their genitals cut in a sad and brutal practice known as female genital mutilation, or FGM. Now, because of you, for the first time ever, the Obama administration is taking serious action to end this terrible practice. When I was a baby, I experienced FGM myself. Now, as a mom with a daughter of my own, I felt it was my duty to make sure what happened to me would never happen to other girls. So I started a petition on Change.org asking the Obama administration to conduct a study to see how widespread the problem is and suggest concrete steps to address it. 220,000 signatures later, the administration did us one better: They announced that not only will they conduct the study we asked for, they will also appoint a working group tasked with ending FGM in the US. This is more than I could have hoped for, and I am over the moon to know that I have played a small part to make this country better for so many little girls. I could not have done this without the tireless help of the inspiring people at The Guardian and Equality Now, who are as committed to this issue as I am. And of course, this would not have happened without you. Thank you for taking a few moments to learn my story, to sign my petition, and to help make this incredible moment possible. I will never forget this feeling as long as I live. With deep thanks, Jaha Dukureh Atlanta, Georgia
