Bedford Academy 74 Mott Haven 48 Mott Haven showed up half loaded and paid the toll as they faced a quality competitor in Bedford Academy who also happens to be will coached and playing the game the right way. From the jump Bedford Academy went to work, bringing that fast Brooklyn style into the Harlem and just like that Bedford scored a layup, creates a turn over and bangs a three. Timeout Mott Haven. Can’t come into SMARTBALL half loaded. Out of the time out, Mott Haven responds but their transition defense was looking suspect and Bedford Academy was off to the races, taking advantage of the favorable #’s and finishing. There was a bright spot for Mott Haven and his name is Lee Melendez. This lefty PG came to play and was the spark that kept this one in striking distance for Mott Haven. Bedford lead, 23-12 after the first and had the confidence. The second eight got competitive, and it was good to see basketball played the right way even though Bedford was clearly the better squad. Fundamentals of the game showed as both teams athletes caught the ball in triple threat, finished with both hands, reversed the ball for the open shot, set solid screens, pick and rolls, flex cuts – Just great to see. Meet Latye Workman of Bedford Academy. Latye started punching Mott Haven shots all over the court. There was one sequence where he blocked the shot trapping it on the glass, snatched it off and created the break and finished on the other end for the andOne #Love It Latye is one of those tweener types that coaches aren’t sure how to recruit because he’s not a guard or forward. I would like to see the Latye really develop his guard skills and transition into a shooting guard. The kid’s got the talent and the grades to be a college player and it would be a shame to see him like so many slip into the cracks and disappear. Meet Anthony Munson of Bedford Academy. Skill set is classic and steady. Gets in done on both ends of the court in multiple facets. Meet the Wonder Twins – This backcourt is going to give the “A” division fits. Anthony Gibbs and Darren Thomas are fun to watch. Inside, outside they do it all. I would be dirty if I didn’t mention Ian Roach of Bedford because he got it done last night as well. The #starshines for Mott Haven were Lee Melendez who carved up Bedford, dipping and dancing from the start, to the finish. Had he made his free-throws, and layups, the guestimation # would be an easy (40) for the night. This guy never quit. Joseph Simmons played well but took off too many plays. James Nelson was also a player who I thought had more in his take but slow-stewed in critical moments of the game. At the end of the day, I’m still trying to figure out how Mott Haven shows up with a few guys and expects to compete in SMARTBALL. Rudy & Russel, you may have to evaluate this invitation for 2014.
