Been avoiding posting, but many have been asking and unintentionally setting off the waterworks (no worries, it happens). My grandmother, who my mom and I have been taking turns sitting with for the last couple of months, passed away on Saturday. She was 93. It wasnt unexpected. In the last two months she had gone from fiesty and mostly able, taking care of herself, taking care of a few house chores, puttering around the house and being her cantankerous self, to after 3 strokes, blind, bed bound, barely able to communicate, more often than not delusional about where she was and when she was... and then finally fell asleep on Wed, multiple organs began to fail, and Saturday afternoon. having never woken back up again, when her minister came by to see her and my Mom, he spoke to her for a bit, and she finally passed on. While I cry more than a little over it, a woman Ive known for 40 odd years suddenly gone from my life, I know shes at peace. No more pain, no more shame or embarrassment not even able to take care of herself. no more loneliness without her brothers and sisters, or husband or son.... She went peacefully. It was her time.... And this afternoon, making fajitas for my boys, and I lost the lid on the spices and dumped nearly a whole bottle in with the chicken, it happened.... clear as day I heard it and I said it to... Well Shit.... My grandmas favorite saying.... My grandmas still around... mom says Im just like her. Feisty old biddy unafraid of telling folks exactly whats on her mind, ready to take on a bull with a switch if it threatens her, and craftier than any three foxes when it comes to needles.... But with a sweet tooth thats not to be denied and a penchant for baking all the things that are bad for me but taste REALLY Good and running about giving them to everyone else so shes not tempted to eat the whole thing....... Yeah, think Grandma left her mark. Staring down at this spicy mess of meat, I just started laughing.... Well Shit.... guess I have big shoes to fill, but Im well on my way.... heaven help my grand children whenever they arrive, cause I know I had one heck of a ride and wouldnt have missed it for the world.
